Port Security

The Gulf of Aden Sector of the Yemen Coast Guard specializes in securing ports and their facilities.  It was established in 2004 and has witnessed rapid development in both the quality of its services and the number of personnel and assets deployed.  It owns fast, specialized high-tech patrol boats able to carry sophisticated weapons, and operates from a marine base on the south side of Aden inner harbour giving rapid access to the port and the open sea, and a military land base.

Expansion in recent years has established coastguard facilities in a number of marine sites on the coastline in Shukra, Ras Imran and Omaira Creek. Preparations are underway for the establishment of other centers on the island of Mayun and at Mokha.  Personnel and officers are trained locally and abroad, with large numbers of young people selected and trained to serve in this sector through the excellent relations, cooperation and coordination between the Yemen Coast Guard authority and similar forces in developed countries.

The Gulf of Aden sector uses its patrol boats and modern equipment to carry out patrols, monitor the marine basin of the port, port approach channels, the coastline and shipping movement round the clock, providing security escorts and protection for ships as and when needed.

The activities of the Coastguard support the high levels of security and stability found at the Port of Aden and in other Gulf of Aden ports since it was established, which are reflected in terms of the significant increases in shipping and commercial traffic.

It conducts extensive training exercises and field operations to address the perceived risk, control armed robbery (piracy), board suspicious vessels and mount rescue operations to help vessels in difficulty.
